We Are The Witnesses

We Are The Witnesses

Through our eyes, the universe is perceiving itself. Through our ears, the universe is listening to its harmonies. We are the witnesses through which the universe becomes conscious of its glory, of its magnificence.
                                                 Alan Watts

Alan Watts shares great insights. They speak to the deepest layers of my soul and they just feel true.

What an unspeakable grace to be part of the Universe’s sensory organs. This is a task that makes me lighter, sharper and more aware. This is a task worth living for, and it makes me want to live as well I can.

Life is unspeakably precious. When I feel that I am part of something much bigger than I can ever understand, it gets even more precious. Being a witness through which the universe becomes conscious of its glory makes me grow and shine.

I Will Not Die an Unlived Life

I Will Not Die an Unlived Life

I will not die an unlived life. I will not live in fear of falling or catching fire. I choose to inhabit my days, to allow my living to open me, to make me less afraid, more accessible, to loosen my heart until it becomes a wing, a torch, a promise.
                                                 Dawna Markova

This is a lifelong task: to let life open me. Every day I practice in letting go of hesitations, fears, and worries and in opening up my heart fully to everything that life serves me.

Constantly I am put to the test, even in seemingly insignificant situations. I can choose the ”safe” way, closing down and saying NO – or I can choose to take the risk and open my heart fully to what- and whoever I encounter.

It is a wonderful feeling to say YES to people and events, to learn and grow. And what a challenge to fully inhabit your days as “a wing, a torch, a promise”!
I have made a solemn promise to myself: not to die an unlived life.

Acceptance

Acceptance

We have a choice. We can spend our whole life suffering because we can’t relax with how things really are, or we can relax and embrace the open-endedness of the human situation, which is fresh, unfixated, unbiased.
Pema Chödrön: Living Beautifully

Throughout our lives we are confronted with situations, people and things that are not as we’d like them to be. Often we’re struggling a lot until we finally learn to deal with them and (hopefully) accept them. So much wasted energy!
I feel that the older I get the more I know how to accept the “unwanted” things in my life, but one big challenge remains – the physical and mental decline connected to high age. I can follow the process with my elderly friends: some seem to have gracefully learned to live at a slower pace, in smaller circles, but some struggle with the fact that there are many things they cannot do anymore and they resent Life for depriving them of former pleasures.  It is a great learning to see these different approaches – and a great incentive to work on “embracing the open-endedness of the human situation”, as Pema Chödrön so beautifully puts it.

Laozi Life Lessons III

Laozi Life Lessons III

In dwelling, live close to the ground.
In thinking, keep to the simple.
In conflict, be fair and generous.
In governing, don't try to control.
In work, do what you enjoy.
In family life, be completely present.
Laozi

These are simple, eternal truths. I wish city planners, businessmen, politicians and military generals – in fact all of us – would use them as guidelines in their/our daily activities. “I have a dream” (of a changed world).

We Need Silence

We Need Silence

We need silence to be able to touch souls.
                                 Mother Teresa

Just like air and light pollution, noise pollution is a real threat to both animals and humans. Constantly being exposed to noises – even if they’re pleasant, like music – is harmful to our brains and general wellbeing.

Some of the constant noise around us is caused by ourselves, so we can do something about it. Turn the music off for a while. Don’t talk to your friends on the phone all the time. Enjoy being silent, try to find silent spaces - and to silence the chatter inside your head. It is during longer periods of silence that you can touch your own soul.

When you’re with a friend there does not always have to be verbal communication.  It is very relaxing to spend silent time together, like walking in a forest without talking, reading or doing something else next to each other - simply enjoying being together. That’s when we are able to touch each other’s souls.
